two weeks.

two weeks!!
Can you believe how quickly time passes?
What a difference one week makes!
I cried on my way to Eve's one week doctor's appointment.
Going to her two week appointment wasn't even hard... i think i'm starting to get the hang of seven kids.

Eve eats a lot, doesn't sleep too much and is very expressive.
She's tiny.
She loves to be held close.
She startles easily, especially when getting her diaper changed.
She's a very mild, sweet baby.
At her 2 week check up she weighed 8 lbs..
She has already gained back her birth weight plus half a pound.
I was not surprised at all-- she eats every 2 hours day and night.

The kids don't get to hold her as much as they would like.
It's hard to share when she is usually nursing, burping or sleeping.
I'm sure as she gets older there will be more play time in her schedule.

Because my last two babies were in the NICU for the first two weeks of their lives, I think I had an unrealistic expectation of how easy it would be to adjust to a newborn.
Bringing home a two week old is different than bringing home a two day old baby.
And, these first two weeks have been harder than I anticipated.
I'm tired and I still have a very sore chest.
Nursing is going a lot better these days, but I'm still not sure how to heal my chest that is still raw from my first week of nursing incorrectly.
Because of the sore spots on my chest, I have to nurse using the football hold.
I can't wait to heal so that I can just cradle my baby and nurse without pain.
But, compared to where I was one week ago, I can't complain at all.

Night time is fun.
This baby is awake all night long.  Awake and fussy.
She is quite a fussy little thing.
I have started watching "Say Yes to the Dress"  or "Cake Boss" on Netflix while I'm feeding her, burping her or bouncing her to sleep.
It makes my nights go by faster.
My last two babies really were amazingly easy.
And, as silly as it sounds, I'm really loving my time with baby eve.
She needs me.  A lot.
And, I love the hours I spend bouncing and cuddling with her.
I can feel that her little tummy is gassy and she doesn't handle burps or toots easily.
She doesn't like loud noises or quick movements.
So, I just swaddle her up and hold her close... all day and all night.
Heavenly.
The only hard part is having 6 other kids and a house to care for.

I have loved week two of this baby's life.
This is definitely a transition time for our family, but it is a beautiful time of life.
We are so blessed.

  1. I think part of the easy part of your last two babies came from being int he NICU. Collin was only in it for a week, but he was such an easy baby. He ate on a set 3 hour schedule, then he slept. He didn't need to be held constantly. It was one of the good things that came from him being in the NICU. Not that I would ever want one in the NICU, but if they have to be there, might as well be on a schedule when they come home.

Eve is gorgeous. Such a beautiful little sweet baby. Congrats to all of you!

  5. She is beautiful!
I had a very painful start to nursing my first and I ended up delivering in a very small hospital - no lactation specialist. I even called a week after having our son and asked if they had one and the person I talked to said, "what's that?" I cried. I ended up borrowing a very nice pump from a gal in our ward and I pumped on the side that was sorest and nursed on the other side. Both were a bit painful but within time I healed and there was no "nipple confusion". Later that same kiddo wouldn't take a bottle and I had a hard time weaning him. Oh, one thing I did with nursing my girls was lather on the lansinoh(?sp) very liberally before I showered and it helped me not be in so much pain during and after showering. Good Luck!

  6. Hi, Jen. Greetings from the hospital! Eve is such a little angel...amazing how time flies, isn't it? This time I will get to learn what it means to have a NICU baby...she'll probably have to be there for 2-3 weeks depending on how early they end up having to deliver the baby but with the lab results the way they were yesterday it looks like it probably won't be too much longer. Much love to you and your family.

  9. She gorgeous! I love all that hair!!!

Have you tried her in your wrap yet? That might help you feel like you can have your hands free a little more often. :) I'm glad you're able to enjoy the nights even though they are hard. There's a reason withholding sleep is used as torture in some countries. I hope she starts sleeping a little better for you soon. :)

  10. Sounds oh so familiar! My third is just like little Eve. I joke that in heaven she misunderstood--she thought she was coming to be an only child. Things got a little better for us at 2 months when she finally took a pacifier and the crying slowed down at about 4 months. At 9 months she continues to "need" me and only me quite a lot, but things are better. You will make it, I promise. And she will probably be the one to take care of you in your old age :)).
