politics by me.

last night we watched the republican national debate.

let me tell you how i see the candidates.
warning--
i am going to vote republican.
i am more interested in their families than the issues.
i do care about issues, kind of.
but, i vote for who i FEEL would be best.
call me shallow... i'm fine with that.

1. HUNTSMAN
:: he just dropped out yesterday and is endorsing Mitt.
:: he is Mormon- but not very active.
:: he has 7 children.  5 biological, one adopted from China and one adopted from India.
:: some people have made videos of jon with his adopted daughters saying that he is a "Manchurian candidate" or in other words, a spy for the Chinese government.
PLEASE... that makes me mad.

:: 3 of his daughters "Jon's Girls" are cute, trendy and have been actively campaigning for him... making spoof you tube videos that gained some popularity.  They were making fun of a Hermain Cain video where he was talking and smoking a cigar.  I thought it was funny and sort of dumb.  I particularly liked one quote I read where one of Huntman's campaign advisors contacted a magazine to remind them that his daughters comments were not necessarily the views of the nominee.  :)

:: Rick Perry really likes Jon Huntsman's family.  This is what he said...
"I was hoping I'd get the Huntsman girls. We love the Huntsman girls, our kids get along well, and Mary Kaye and Anita are best friends. Jon’s a dear friend too, and we’ve had a wonderful time getting to know the candidates.

"They will continue to be great and good friends. This process is an interesting one, it’s very intramural-scrimmage wise, but we love them and they’re a great family...(They're) a beautiful, wonderful fun family."

2. ROMNEY
:: very active Mormon
::  has lots of kids... 5 boys i think and his wife has MS.

:: glenn beck, another prominent Mormon-- likes Santorum better.
:: comes from Massachusetts-- where he was governor of a liberal state.  A lot of the junk he gets for being liberal comes from his record in that state.  When i hear the details it sounds to me like he was just trying to be a good leader-- doing what the people in his state wanted him to do.  i really don't think ANY ONE in America can just plow their own agenda through without some mediation.
:: i like him when he talks.  i feel he's a good man-- but he isn't the most fun to listen to.

3.  PERRY
:: current Governor of Texas.
::  i love Texas and i LOVE this man.
seriously, when he talks i smile.
last night he said something about securing the border... i'm paraphrasing... "the people of America don't ask how much will it cost they ask when will we GET ER DONE."  go Texas!  i LOVE it.
:: i don't love his religion bashing comments about romney. (or those of his staff)
:: he is a no nonsense, non-apologizing, very conservative guy.
it works in Texas.  not sure it would work in Washington.
::  Perry is married to Anita- his childhood sweetheart.  They have one daughter named Griffin, and a son named Sydney.  he's a politician and a cowboy.

4. GINGRICH
:: oh Newt.  this guy has been married 3 times, with 3 different affairs (if i'm not mistaken).
:: his current wife is kinda cute, but it makes me sick to think of them in the white house.

:: Newt in the white house-- NEVER.  NEVER.
:: to me, he is the picture of a dirty politician.  i do not trust him.
:: after he lost his Congressional seat he was hired by Freddie and Fannie as a consultant where he made millions.  he says he was advising him but they didn't listen to his recommendations.  i believe him, but i think he's one of those guys that would cheat, lie and steal for a few million dollars.  morally-- NO WAY JOSE.
:: now, intellectually-- i love that guy.
he is RIGHT.  very, very RIGHT.  and he is BOLD (like Perry).
i love that.
really, he makes me laugh.
:: he said we should hire poor kids to be the janitors in schools.  when asked if that was an offensive comment he said, "republicans think work is good.  because of unions janitors in New York make a ridiculous amount of money.  We could fire one New York janitor and hire three kids and raise them out of poverty."  hah!  it made sense to me and i love that he doesn't apologize for his beliefs.  (well, maybe he owes his ex-wives a few apologies.)
:: i think Newt Gingrich belongs on TV as a political analyst and a talk radio commentator-- teaching the people NOT leading them.

5. SANTORUM
:: he's also very conservative.
:: Glenn beck wonders if he is the modern-day Winston Churchill.
:: I really wanted to like him... BUT,
I don't find him very inspiring.  When i hear him talk he sounds kind of whiny.
He reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld.
:: he was in the Senate, but lost in the last election-- so he is currently unemployed as he runs for President.
i believe this is a financial worry for his family.
:: he is very Catholic.  he has seven children.  (sometimes i confuse his oldest daughter- dark hair, for his wife-lighter.  his oldest daughter looks just like him in girl form.)
:: his youngest daughter has trisomy 18, she wasn't supposed to live a year and is now 3 and a half.  they think she could pass away any day.  many have given him a hard time for campaigning with a sick baby-- he says she inspires him to change things.  (this is similar to the heat Palin took for campaigning with a Down's baby.)  I admire him for living what he believes.  I trust Santorum is doing what he believes to be right.
:: his wife delivered one baby early, at 20 weeks.  They opted to take the baby home with them to show their other children before they buried her.  Alan Colmes (on hannity and Colmes) gave him a hard time for this.  i do think it's a bit odd... but who am i to judge how a family decides to mourn the passing of their child?
:: and, this picture makes me laugh-- it is Santorum's daughter with her american girl doll... i'm not sure why she was so sad...
:: i always think his poor wife looks exhausted.  she's probably so stressed and busy.  here is a picture of her introducing her husband, the baby threw up on him so he is handing her to a family friend.  don't you know that santorum's wife just wishes she was AT HOME watching this on TV?  what a saint.
:: overall, i think he should get a great job in the Republican Nominee's cabinet-- but i'm not sure he is presidential material yet.

6. Ron Paul
:: oh ron paul.
i hardly know what to say.
:: i don't think he's republican... i think he is libertarian.
he's smart.
he's funny.
he reminds me of a grandfather.
the debate guy says, "OK, we'll give you 30 seconds to respond."  He replies, "I need a minute, at least."
he's funny.
he says, "You guys just don't get it do you?"
and he's right.
he's trying to explain the details of politics to a country that really has no clue how things in Washington REALLY happen.
he's too "out there" for me.
too extreme... too philosophical.
i don't think he would make a good president... but i hope somebody takes that man and uses his knowledge for some applied good.
he's smart.
i do want to check out his cookbook though...
:: ron paul has five children.  they were baptized episcopalian.  he was raised Lutheran and attends a baptist church.  some of his sons are also in politics-- i love that.  and, his wife would be a Barbara bush first lady-- cute.

and that, my friends, is my political moment.
laugh, if you may.
but know-- i do spend some time learning about our candidates.
have a good day!

  1. I can't believe you like Perry!!! He just reminds me of a bratty kid. He doesn't say much during the debates (cuz no one really cares to hear it) and when he does it's snippy and "oh yeah? whell how bout this"ish.
I feel the same about Gingrich.
Santorum has some good ideas (especially on foreign policy) but there is NO way he would win against Obama. He would never get the independant votes.

OHHHHHHH RON.... this guy needs a punch in the face (sorry) Fun little fact>>> Ron Paul's occupatin? Gynecologist==== CREEEPY! His views foreign policy are scary. Oh, Iran wants to have nuclear capabilities???? No problem! It's none of our business! Oh, the Taliban?? They don't hold any ill will towards us! They just want us off their land!
Anyhoo.... just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents! I'm glad you watched last night. It was a good one :)
    I love you!

  2. Being a long time Ron Paul fan -- I had a sign and bumper sticker for him in 2008-- this shed a little light for me on Republicans general refusal to consider him as a legitimate candidate. I don't think it has to do with logic and seriously considering the issues, I think it has more to do with being afraid to do something out of the ordinary. All the other candidates will give us more of the same-- keep the status quo.

Personally I'd like to see real change. I'd like to see a balanced budget and significant cuts in spending. I'd like to see us get out of these far away wars. He's the only veteran up there by the way, and he has the most money donated by military people. He wins the majority of voters in the 18-30 age group which I think gives the country as a whole hope for the future once the baby boomers get out of the way. It's time for a real change. People tend to like his consistent domestic policy-- if he's so smart that way-- can he really be so wrong on his foreign policy? And if you are voting by nice families and character -- he's got it. He doesn't flip flop at all. You know where he stands and he's done so 30 years. People are finally starting to listen.

Ron Paul is a legitimate choice and probably the only one with a real chance of beating Obama. Realistically though, I'll take Obama over the other Republican candidates because he'll be watched by Republicans. George W. Bush passed more liberal laws and did more damage to the constitution than any Democrat president could have done.

So there you go-- my little vent. To each his own!! We can still be friends!

  3. Amber- I will admit that I am pretty out of the loop politically these days. We don't have TV so I just get random snippets of info... Last night was the first debate I've seen.
I'm pretty sure that Perry is a veteran also.
And Patti- I like Perry... Because he's a Texas guy... I am laughing/cringing about his Turkey comments that caused the Turkish gov't to get upset... He said he would shift our foreign aid to zero and we don't even give them any foreign aid. Hah!? And, Perry stood by. His words without apologizing... I wouldn't vote for him... And he won't win the nomination... But he makes me smile.

Amber--- seriously you would rather have Obama?
Not me. I would even rather have first lady Gingrich than Obama times two...
Thanks for commenting, I'll look again at Paul...

And-- I'm not voting on nice family... I'm just beginning with nice family... This is only the beginning... Election season is still a long ways off!!

  4. -Yeah, Perry is a veteran too.
-How can a person say they'd "like to see real change", and in the next breath say they'd vote for Obama again?? Makes me crazy thinking ANYONE would make a choice to vote for a person who would continue leading... no wait... "leading" or country down this path.
-There is NO way that Paul would win in an election against Obama. No way. His views on foreign policy are way to extreme to get pretty much ANY conservative votes. (sorry)
-Paul wants to dish out on his disdain for Obama, but won't rule out running as an independant WHEN he doesn't win the repub nomination. This would do nothing but insure that Obama wins a second term.
-Gotta love anyone who cares enough about the country to even have these interesting little "debates" ;) Makes me happy when people give a crap about the election even when I TOTALLY disagree with them ;););)
