Any ideas?

Any ideas what this is?
My leah always has red around her mouth.
I've tried taking her to the doctors... but it comes and goes, and the doctors haven't thought it was a big deal.
I just don't like that I don't know what it is...
First, I thought it was a food allergy.
Then, I thought it was just dry skin.
But today, I am perplexed.

What do you think?

My first thought was a food allergy. My 2 year old has red on his cheeks - we are going to try to eliminate dairy and see if it clears it up. Could be dairy, wheat, or some other food. Good luck figuring it out!

Are you sure it isn't just chapped?
Adam's mouth looks a lot like that all fall and winter. . .
who knows?

From your daughter's photo I see the same thing that I have: eczema. I am not saying that is what she has. It just looks very similar to what I sometimes get.

I am a mother of five who has atopic dermatitis (eczema.) Two out of five of my children also have this skin problem.

I will share with you what I have heard from my doctors and reading.

With atopic dermatitis your skin is sensitive. Allergy skin tests for us proved useless because we react to all of the skin pricks - - - - imagine your whole back being pricked for allegoric reactions only to have your whole back become one giant hive! Needless to say we use a sensitive skin detergent and skin soap - - - - no bubble baths.

Eczema is mostly found in children, and 80% children afflicted with it do not carry it into adulthood. I believe that the most common areas afflicted with this skin disorder are areas behind the knees, areas opposite of the elbows, and areas behind ears. It most frequently flares up in skin areas most susceptible to moisture exposure. (mouth – saliva)

Now for my history.

I suffer with a patch of eczema by my mouth. It comes and goes depending on what I eat.

In my family we keep the afflictions under control by using a prescription topical cr̬me prescribed by our reputable dermatologist and by staying clear of any food with corn in it - - - most importantly corn syrup which is in everything - - so out goes popcorn, fruit roll ups, soda, popsicles, cereal, tomato products, store bought breads, etc. I cook from scratch. Other contributors to our outbreaks are foods with whole grains (think healthy non-processed foods Рyou know, the good stuff) like whole wheat and oatmeal. What a bummer! I love steal cut oatmeal with cranberries, but two days of eating that gives me my red spots/rashes. Citric acid (in everything) will also make my twenty-two year old son and me have eczema flare ups.

I hope that my history helps you out. I recommend finding the best dermatologist that you can and make an appointment for your daughter. The internet is loaded with a lot of great articles and good photos of this skin disorder.

It does look like eczema. My nephew had it and my sister switched him to soy milk and it helped clear it up. I would take her to the doctor, because even if it comes and goes it could be something with her diet and they can help you get it under control.

Natalie has really dry skin with eczema patches. Put some Aquaphor on a couple times a day and it should help. We use a very light steroid creme (cortisone) that we put on a few of her patches if they get inflammed. But with the mouth it is trickier so we just stick with Aquaphor.

A friend of mine's son would lick his bottom lip and the skin under it all the time...I'm not saying that this is really it because you probably would have noticed that happening.

Splashed Kool-Aid perhaps?

thanks so much for all your comments.
NO, it's not kool-aid... this time. :)
It does go away with Aquaphor-- my FAVORITE for everything... but I do think it could be related to an allergy. (She will DIE if she's allergic to milk. All that child eats is milk based.)
I never realized that eczema could be food related... thanks for your wisdom!!!
